Castelló d’Empúries is the nearest town and the administrative center which Empuriabrava belongs to. if you rent the villa you may easily reach the place by walk or bike, it's just 2-3 km away. The town, previously center of local county, has a calm medieval center with large basilica de Santa Maria being the most praised landmark.
The basilica is built over original Romanesque church and, therefore, located on site of one of the oldest churches in the region. Here you may find old roman baptismal font, Gothic altairpiece with a statue of Our Lady of Candelmas, local patron saint, as well as rich Baroque altarpiece in the Chapel of Els Dolors. There is also the parish museum (Museu Parroquial), housed in the sacristy. The basilica's organ was restored in recent years and now is used in masses and for concerts during holidays.
Although walking around the town center takes less than an hour, you may find interesting attractions to visit. Thus, the tourist information office is located in the building of the old prison (Preso) and you may visit the small museum depicting the scenes in the medieval prison of Castello.
Local restaurants offer quality food at affordable prices. Although some restaurants and bars are closed during the winter, you will always find a place to eat in the town.
If you happen to be in the area first week of September it is worth visiting Terra de Trobadors annual festival in Castelló. The town returns to medieval times for 3-4 days with numerous carnivals, tournaments, concerts, etc. You may visit knights tournament, costume contest, outdoor music concets and other activities. The festival's programmes usually lasts for 3-4 days around the local holiday, Catalonia Day.
