Besalu is located approximately 20 km west of Figueres in the Garrotxa region and may be reached from Empuriabrava by car within 30 minutes. Old roman bridge leads you to the well-preserved medieval center with 12th century churches and several unique sights such as ancient Jewish purifying baths, the Mikwe.
The town was a center of separate county in IX-XII centuries and later joined the County of Barcelona after local count died without a heir. While walking through Besalu you may perfectly feel the medieval athmosphere of an old Catalan town. It is possible to get audio guides at the local tourist office located on the main square.
